I see talk on show reviews about early 73-74 eyes containing slipknot jams. I've listened to a lot and I've never heard a slipknot jam in any of them. I think maybe people are mistaking some piece of the eyes jamming for slipknot? Or maybe there are a few versions I have not heard that have a legitimate slipknot jam?

Any input would be appreciated. I will note that I have heard at least one legitimate slipknot jam in '74, namely the 1974-07-25 at the end of dark star. But definitely nothing in eyes.

this is the first one I ever heard about, not entirely clear cut I guess but I can hear it more than the supposed 11 jam at the 9-28-75 show

There's a bit of it that's definitely in 11/8 time, and the drum rhythms are really similar - the familiar "WHAP WHAP" at the last two beats of each measure are there.

Overall, this isn't really an "eleven" jam, it's just a jam that happens to have the same odd time signature. The piece of the actual song that it's closest to is the switch back to a minor key AFTER the verses are sung.

Isn't there a slipknot jam out of the 10/20/74 eyes?

Indeed there is at around the 14 minute mark of the 10-20-74 Eyes....DB IX and X both have it listed in "song lists" as "Slipknot intro" but not in "every time played"....

that's only because you were too busy complaining that they weren't as good as in 68. : )

I envy you for being at that show, one of my all time favorites. And free too!

Ha! Good one...you'll be pleased to know that back then I only liked the straight up tunes (ie, Sk&Roses, Bobby and cowboy tunes, etc.)...seriously! I almost never listened to Anthem, not even much LiveDead either.

And get this, until TFTV came out, I probably only ever heard a couple of CE-->OO-->CE! They just weren't available. Everything I had was more or less 71 thru 77.

I have made up for it since then that's for sure!

Oh, and yep--I think I have said it a number of times, but really, this Sept show, and the June one, were by far my fav shows that I attended, for a variety of reasons. That June one had a great CFing, and PegO.

There's definitely some in '73, but it'll take some long research for me to find them again. I think there was even talk on this forum awhile back.

Not only that but there's a shadow of Slipknot in The Other One past at 3:20 in this great show:

This is a great thread and I am enjoying the Eyes into Slipknot jam....According to Deadbase 6-20-74 is the first performance of Slipknot. They then played Slip once in July and then not again until June of 1975 when it entered the Help/Slip/FT lineup.. Its interesting to think about the timing and why they tacked it on the back of Eyes for the first performance and then basically went a year without playing it....It wasn't actually recorded and release till 1975....I wonder what the story behind this is. Also, I believe that Maria Muldaur opened the 6-20 show. I could swear that she is on vocals in Eyes....it doesnt sound like DJG.....

Check out the lick that Jerry plays at 6:58 in The Other One in this show. This could be the first 5 seconds of Slipknot ever played.

WOW - thank you for this, it is indeed a slipknot jam! My thought was people were taking the 7/8 jam that ends most early eyes for slipknot. This one is definitely the slipknot riff.

Thanks!

Oh, but what about that Slipknot jam Jerry & Phil played at one of the Matrix Hartbeat shows, October 18 '68?

(Just kidding....)

Or the Slipknot lick at 0:53 in Robert Johnson's original 1920s recording of "they're red hot"?

Edit: Can't forget about the classic slipknot riff contained in bar 49 of Beethoven's 8th symphony.

You don't think music just comes out of thin air?

These things are funny. Here's one where Jerry seems to be temporarily possessed by a song from an upcoming album, after 5:35 in The Eleven:

Just a flash, then back to mining the regular vein.

I kept seeing this and thinking it was a post about whether we should pay for DL'ing:

"You don't think music just comes out of thin air?"

I will point out that most sound is inherently an aerial phenomenon, but to quote Bob, I won't bore you with lengthy explanations of this...
